Shocked! That's how U.S. makers of electric buses say they feel, following a decision by the transit authority of Long Beach, Calif., to buy 10 electric buses made in China--but financed by U.S. taxpayers.

Sad that we can't compete with the Chinese in products. It's sad that we can't produce a bus that beats out BYD ... Or that we haven't produced a Bus that would work. Instead we continually screw ourselves by dealing with who knows who.. and which mob boss gets his cut.... Damn shame really.

Im appalled at this. Both as an american and a californian. Why do we keep electing the people in the shallow end of the gene pool? Too much weed in high school? What is it?

how can we permit taxpayer dollars to go to China instead of one located a few miles away? Why would anyone buy a $1.2 million bus vs a diesel-powered one for $400K? #stupid

Private American suppliers are always competing against the entire gov't of China.
A bit of a mismatch. I think we should be buying American products even if they do cost a few dollars more.

for the 14.1 million they could've bought a cheap U.S. made car for each of the bus riders to use!

Maybe the buses really cost $600k each. With the rest of the money the Chinese buy each city official a new house, car, or set up some foreign account for them.

At least the American workers will be the ones repairing these buses in a few months. Because we all know how long "Made in China" products last, and you can't ship back buses.

It doesn't seem logical that city leaders would make a big purchase like that from a Chinese company while there are US companies that can do the job. Bribes maybe ?

That maybe why the decision shoould have been left to the tax payer, since it is the tax payer doing the funding. Also could it be that Kevin Lee is part of the reason the contract went to China. Just sayin

They're going to procure parts, build the buses, get DOT (and how ever many more) approvals, all in 2 months???? Then they have to find somebody who needs money badly enough to want to ride in an untested vehicle.

These unknown electric transit buses are $1.2 mil apiece? That's quite a bit of inflation, or one heck of a bribe.
This from a discussion on airliners dot net on the subject of the cost of transit buses about 2 years ago.... More
