2009 New York Preview: 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee shows Chrysler’s capabilities

4 million sales later, Chrysler has significantly improved the Jeep Grand Cherokee for the 2011 model year (we’ll tell you later why it’s been designated a 2011 model year). As you can see, the 2011 Grand Cherokee gets a total new design inside-out along with an impressive engine and options lineup.
The 2011 Grand Cherokee is built on the rear-wheel-drive unibody platform sharing its underpinnings with the Mercedes-Benz ML. In addition to its new Quadra-Lift air suspension, the all-new Selec-Terrain allows customers to choose the off-road settings for all terrains. Choices include Sand/Mud, Sport, Auto, Snow and Rock.
Power for the base model comes from a new flexible fuel “Phoenix” 3.6L V6 engine that produces 280-hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. Chrysler says that fuel-economy is improved by up to 11 percent when compared to the previous Grand Cherokee model. The V6 model is mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission.
Chrysler is forging on with its high-performance HEM engines despite being ridiculed for producing gas-guzzling SUVs. The 5.7L HEMI V8 produces a total 360-hp with a maximum torque of 390 lb-ft. It is mated to a 545RFE multi-speed automatic transmission.
For international market, the new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee model will be available in left and right-hand drive. But that all depends on if Chrysler can prove its viability - which is why the new Grand Cherokee carries a 2011 model year designation.
