As a community of residents living in Shanghai we had the opportunity to come together on the 26th May 2007 to participate in the second River of Hearts Clothing Drive/Sorting Party for 2007.
Large amounts of clothing were collected from locations all over Shanghai and then taken to the sorting venue situated in Hong Qiao Golf Villas. Volunteers arriving were welcomed with the sight of clothing and goods, towering the size of a little mountain. Donations were in the form of clothes, shoes, toys, kitchenware and videos. After a small induction session explaining how the goods would be sorted, the sorting got underway. The enthusiasm among those present was electric. Our hostess for the day, Catherine Chan, also arranged a River of Hearts Bazaar where the public could buy non-clothing items. The atmosphere was festive and happy with everyone eagerly grabbing a bag/box/container emptying the contents and then sorting it into any of the 12 categories of clothing, shoes and toys. We are very greatful to Cisco and IDS who made their staff available for this event. Due to the sheer volume of goods, there were doubts as to whether we would be able to sort all the goods in the allotted time. These doubts flew out the window after lunch with the arrival of the 20 employees from IDS. Some of us felt as if we had just been rescued by the US Cavalry as depicted in those old western movies. In addition to these companies we also had high school students, professionals, entrepreneurs, families, etc sacrificing their time. We received a call from a mother asking if we had enough food for everyone. StRanger(参数|询价)s passing by enquired as to what was happening and then, without hesitation, joined in the activities. A total of approximately 80 volunteers from 10 different countries participated. It was encouraging to see the community working side-by-side and supporting this cause in the following ways:
Clothing donations from the Shanghai Public
Hosts of drop off locations making their houses/garages available;
Santa Fe (Moving and Logistics company), for making available trucks to collect goods from the drop off locations;
Roots and Shoots (Jane Goodall Institute) donating a large quantity of clothing and toys;
SCA Packaging for making a special box order and then donating it to ROH;
Catherine Chen and her very able and willing employees assisting with the venue, food and ROH table selling goods and other items for charity purposes;
Li & Fung Trading Service, 19 boxes clothing/toys/shoes and 1230rmb cash donation for transportation;
and
Employees from IDS and Cisco companies.
Indeed, this event was a truly community event. We will remember a lot of things including the passion, dedication and commitment displayed by our volunteers in sorting the goods. Just before leaving, we were encouraged by the words of the local shanghainese truck driver as he quipped: ¨Donˇt worry about this consignment. It carries a lot of goodwill and I will make sure that it reaches those for whom it is intended〃.
Our NGO partner in Qinghai is ready and waiting to receive the donations for distribution. On behalf of the disabled children, orphans, handicapped, poor and impoverished of Qinghai Province, ROH would like to say to all the volunteers: ¨Thank you very much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!〃
