as you add parts to your car, like exhaust, you will be able to run more boost.
as you add parts like intercoolers, water injection and the like you will be able to add timing.
take advantage of this. thats how you make the best power, use the software.
first thing is first. take a setting and roll with it. revo, hb 1 timing 3, apr vtune stock "chipped settings" You could start hotter, but im a "start safe and bring it back" kind of guy. drive the car around for a bit (couple of days) and get on the throttle some, let the ecu adapt a bit.
schedule a meeting with your local dyno or better yet a buddy, vagcom/ecu explorer, and some closed road. *cough*
do a run from 1600 rpms in 3rd gear all the way to redline while logging a block 020. you are looking for LOW SINGLE DIGIT NUMBERS here. this is your knock sensor. dont piss it off. if it looks good, try to turn the timing up. keep going up until you hit probably 4-5 (this will vary on each individual car, so be mindful) if you go too high you will start pulling chunks of timing out and thats bad ju ju for the power curve. once you have that set go ahead and start turning the boost up a little and watch it some more. you can also use block 11 for ignition advance timing, and blocks 022 and 023 to watch pairs of c*** retardation. on the dyno look for a smooth curve, if its getting jumpy, especially up top, check your timing again. i tune for 020 of 3.0 across the board while on wot. this leaves extra head room for full load to off throttle situations and lots of heavy driving..a very conservative tune, but i still made very good power.(240tq 190hp, stock exhaust)
keep in mind the closer to a limit you hit with that timing, and the more agressively you tune it the more sensitive the car will be to atmospheric and temp changes, so be ready to tune, and remember that what settings work on your buddy's car may or may not be ideal for yours. spend the time and set it up right and enjoy nice, smooth power.
as you adjust your fueling take a look at lambda. remember that lambda = (actual A/F) / (14.6) for our engines.

ive found that stock ic cars with vtune are limited for the most part to stock "chipped timing" (temp depending)
