What Type of Oil Should I Use in The Mazda 6i/6s? Whats the Stock Oil? Is Synthetic Ok? How Long Can Synthetic Last? What Type of Oil Should I Use in the MPS 6? (Mazdaspeed 6)
Both the Mazda 6i and 6s have the same oil requirements, a 5w-20 oil which meets or exceeds the Ford WSS-M2C-153H specification. As long as you use an oil which meets these specifications, you will be fine as far as the car's warranty is concerned.
The stock factory fill is Motorcraft 5w-20 semi-synthetic. This is a bit more expensive then many 5w-20 oils, but also very good at protecting the engine. Its one of the best non-synthetic 20 wt oil's on the market currently, so you can't go wrong sticking to what mazda puts in.
If your looking for something that gives a bit more protection, you'll want to switch to synthetic oils. Of the low weight oils on the market currently, 0w-20 mobil1, 5w-20 redline, 5w-20 royal purple, and 0w-30 German Castrol are recommended. The 6's seem to like oils in the 20-30 wt range, and respond best to those viscosities.
Using synthetic engine oil will not void your warranty, and the switch to synthetic can generally be done at anytime...but is usually recommended after the first thousand miles. (To allow for proper break-in to occur). Its highly recommended to use a filter with synthetic media if your switching to synthetic oil (such as the K&N or Mobil1), this ensures adequate filtration on extended drains.
Synthetic oil would technically last indefinitely, if not for the byproducts of combustion making their way into the medium. Because of this, the additives in the oil are depleted over time, and will eventually exhaust themselves, being unable to take up additional byproducts. As such generally synthetics can be run to 10,000 miles without a bypass filter without issues. If you plan on running such a long OCI (oil change interval), make sure to get a UOA (Used Oil Analysis) to verify the oil's TBN (Total Base #, or additives remaining) is still in the green range at that point.
You also don't want to extend an OCI past 7.5k miles during your primary vehicle warranty period. Failure to do so (there is about a 1000 mile buffer range) can result in voiding of your powertrain warranty. Always remember to save your recepits and log oil changes if your DIY'in!!!
Mazdaspeed 6 Information and Recommendations
The Mazdaspeed is an upgraded version of the standard 6i platform using forced induction to produce a significant amount of power over the other 6's in Mazda's lineup. The turbocharger in the MPS 6 is both water and oil cooled, which helps reduce the strain on the vehicles oil system slightly, but not completely, over a fully oil cooled turbo.
Even with a water cooled turbo, temperatures of the oil in the turbo can still reach upwards of 300F, which can greatly reduce the operating efficency of the oil.
Because of this, synthetic fluids are recommended in the weights laid out in the service manual (5w-30 and 10w-30). With a non synthetic oil, you shouldn't let intervals go too far past 3-4k miles. A UOA can confirm this as sheering and drops in viscosity grades will occur when the oil is pushed past its temperature ceiling.
Additionally, early UOA's of Mazdaspeed 6's indicate fuel dilution...or excess fuel getting into the oil. This could be a byproduct of the Direct Injection system, or just Mazda's incrediably rich teir EPA2 fuel curve at 4k+ rpm (nearly 10:1 at 4k rpm). Regardless, fuel in the oil will cause sheering, and reduce the maximum interval you can extend an oil change. As such, even with synthetic oils, I would be cautious to extend an interval past 5,000 miles without also doing a UOA to confirm the oil is both still within grade, and still has sufficent TBN to continue protecting the engine.
So short summary.
5w-30 or 10w-30
Synthetic highly recommended with 4-5k interval, don't go past 5k without a UOA
If you use semi-syn, plan to change every 3-4k miles.
You may be wondering why these recommendations are for such short intervals, when companies like audi, and vw spec up to 10,000 mile oil change intervals in their turbo charged vehicles.
Thats because the audi/vw owners that ran 10,000 mile intervals ended up with sludged engines, which is why in 2004 audi/vw was forced to extend the warranty of all 1.8T owners due to improper recommendations to their dealerships. Those owners that stuck to 5k intervals with synthetic fluids never had any problems.
