A tourist boat silhouetted against the setting sun ferries its passengers down the Nile.
The thin green corridor of the Nile Valley is a mere 7.5 percent of Egypt's land. The contrasting green and umber of the Egyptian landscape forms a sharp line between fertile earth and parched desert. "The gift of the Nile—that’s what the ancients called this country," said a local man.

"Tall grass is the favorite habitat of the greater one-horned Indian rhinoceros, Rhinoceros unicornis, found only in the [Indian] subcontinent. It grows to a weight of more than two tons on a diet of little but grass. Of the 1,900 or so left on earth, Chitwan harbors about 450."

Hedgerows separate fields in Wales. From 1984 to 1990 there has been a net decline of more than 53,000 miles (85,295 kilometers) of hedgerows, mostly because they are not needed any more and have no economic value.

Tobago, Trinidad and Tobago, 1998

The dining room of a small hotel on Tobago offers a poolside seat.
Tobago is the quieter, smaller, half of the dual-island carribean republic Trinidad and Tobago. Dining options range from surf-and-turf combos served in air-conditioned splendor to streetside shanties selling pig trotters (feet) and fried codfish. Fresh-as-you'll-find-anywhere seafood is standard fare at eateries on the island.

Cumulus clouds billow over the landscape near Cedar City, Utah. Cedar City averages 45.4 inches (115.3 centimeters) of snowfall annually. Claiming "the greatest snow on earth," Utah attracts close to 500,000 skiers each year, not counting the locals.

Lanai, Hawaii, 1996

A reflecting pool at the luxury hotel Lodge at Koele mirrors the natural beauty of Lanai.
The entire island of Lanai used to be a private pineapple farm. When the island was sold in 1985, the new owners decided to turn it into a tropical getaway. Lying in the rain shadow of two nearby islands, Lanai receives little precipitation. For pineapples, this could cause problems, but for travelers, the dry, cool climate is perfect for cultivating vacations.

Scenery blurs as a car travels south down a section of U.S. Route 1 in Massachusetts.
Linking 14 states, U.S. Route 1 stretched 2,500 miles from Fort Kent, Maine to Key West, Florida, when it was completed in 1938. For 40 years it flourished as the East Coast's premier highway during the golden age of motoring.
