A hippo on the Zambezi may look harmless with peg-like teeth and tiny ears, but the water mammal can quickly turn fierce and has been known to topple canoes along the river.

这头耳小牙尖的赞比西河马看上去似乎挺憨厚，但水生的哺乳动物却都是火爆脾气，曾经有人见过这种河马把河上的独木舟掀翻。

Familiar with war’s ghosts, a Cambodian man passes a rusting antiaircraft gun left from days when all the land was a battlefield. This rusted gun is a reminder of Cambodia’s mass genocide under the Khmer Rouge rule from 1975 to 1979.

"Today, gold rush history dominates the Chilkoot Trail. There are glaciers set like chips of blue-green jewels among the mountains, and you might see a mountain goat or a black bear in a meadow, but the Chilkoot is not a wilderness trail. It is a hike through history. Here, you walk through the footsteps of the stampeders."

“Lofty abode of the gods, Himalayan peaks rise more than 23,000 feet [7,010 meters] above sea level some forty miles [sixty-four kilometers] north of the Kathmandu Valley. The productive basin—4,400 feet [1,341 meters] in elevation and at the same latitude as central Florida—basks in December sunshine. During the summer, monsoon clouds bring heavy rainfall that permits extensive irrigation.”
