Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii, 1974
  Robert W. Madden
"Fiery lava pours from Kilauea, a volcano in Hawaii, and streams across previous flows now hardened into black volcanic rock. Kilauea's repeated eruptions have built up a shield volcano, so named because its shape, that of an overturned saucer, resembles a warrior's shield. Some of the world's largest volcanoes are in this category."
—From the National Geographic book Exploring Your World: The Adventure of Geography, 2003

Wind Cave National Park, South Dakota, 1997
  Raymond Gehman
Black-tailed prairie dogs live in harmony with bison on the plains of South Dakota, but the same cannot be said for the prairie dogs' relationships with some humans in the area. To many ranchers, the dogs are seen as vermin and a threat to the grass supply for their grazing cattle.

Green River Overlook, Canyonlands National Park, Utah, 1991
  Bruce Dale
A respite for Canyonlands travelers, these rocks overlook Green River, the Colorado River's main tributary in the park. The geologic formations are a result of erosion on the sedimentary rock over millions of years.

  Iceland, 1996
  Steve Winter
"Built to withstand floods of 317,000 cubic feet (8,976 cubic meters) per second, Iceland's longest bridge was no match for the 1.6 million-cfs gusher unleashed by [the eruption of Vatnaj鰇ull volcano, which melted much of the snow on top of it]. For a few hours the volume of the water rivaled the flow of the world's second largest river, the Congo. No lives were lost, but damage to roads and utility lines is estimated at one billion Icelandic kronur ($15,000,000 U.S.)梐 sizable bill for the nation's 265,000 citizens."

  Abusir, Egypt, 1998
  Kenneth Garrett
Located several miles south of the Pyramids at Giza, Abusir's smaller pyramids mark the burials of forgotten kings and queens of the 5th dynasty. Here also is a cemetery of shaft tombs from the sixth century B.C., when the Persians invaded Egypt. At the bottom of one of these shafts is a rare archaeological find: the unlooted tomb of Iuffaa, an Egyptian priest.
